A Thousand Lives: How Stories Influence Social Change
Stories are important in driving the vehicle of social change. Throughout history, stories relating to human rights abuses, government policies, and social justice have all helped to push forward progress around the world.

Mandela Washington Fellows are a crop of young people who are working to influence their communities and countries through stories and action. Some Fellows have illuminated the plight of disadvantage kids in slum communities, others have demonstrated how simple things like art can be used to influence a group of young people to promote change.

A Thousand Lives: How Stories Influence Social Change panelist will present the inspiring impact of the work they have done in order to bring change to their community using different storytelling techniques.

Participants will learn
  • the art of using visual, kinesthetic, and auditory methods to tell compelling stories about the work they do in their communities.how stories can be used to drive social change
  • how stories are interwoven and how best to frame isolated ideas into a big picture story.
  • how to use stories to apply for grants and funding
  • how to use stories to show growth and impact

The Mandela Washington Fellowship and the YALI Network in Nigeria work to develop and promote young leaders who look within their communities and find specific areas in which they can serve to bring change to such communities.

This session is powered by the passion and success of Mandela Fellows from across the continent and is coordinated by the Mandela Washington Fellows Alumni Association (Nigeria Chapter) and IREX.

Inclusion For All: Making Financial Inclusion A Reality For Nigeria
According to the World Bank, Financial Inclusion is "the ability of individuals and businesses to access useful and affordable financial products and services that meet their needs transactions, payments, savings, credit and insurance delivered in a responsible and sustainable way".   Financial Inclusion also refers to citizens access to financial services in such a manner that enables every adult citizen to realize his/her full potential and life aspirations. Growing financial inclusion as a means of lifting citizens out of poverty, improving citizens quality of life and enhancing the capacity of citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development. In Nigeria, only 41 % of Nigerians had bank accounts in 2017, a decline from 44 percent in 2014, according to the World Bank. With 2018 starting out with stagnant financial inclusion numbers in June of 2018 the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a National Financial Inclusion strategy review in order to stay on track for the 2020 80% financial inclusion goal. The reviewed strategy puts forward a draft of suggestions on the best model to help drive financial inclusion in the country. Others have said the country is a peculiar one and as such, it needs a tailor-made strategy, as compared to the mobile money model that has spurred financial inclusion growth around the world. Meanwhile, in furtherance of its mandate to promoting a sound financial system in Nigeria and the need to enhance access to financial services for the unbanked rural segments of society, Nigeria 's Central  Bank recently proposed Payment Service Banks (PSB) aimed at helping to achieve the set 80 percent financial inclusion rate by 2020.

Inclusion for all is the only way to achieve economic prosperity for Nigeria. Every Nigerian is needed to improve the quality of life for all. Inclusion For All: Making Financial Inclusion a reality for Nigeria is a panel by BusinessDay Media Limited, which aims to shed light on financial inclusion issues and opportunities to speak to uncover the bottlenecks that are currently being faced and realistically pan out how to achieve the 2020 80 % financial inclusion goal. Too often political contests fail to achieve their objectives. There is widespread concern about falling turnout, public disaffection, party polarization, and the failure of elections to ensure legitimate outcomes. Electoral malpractices continue to undermine contests around the world, from overt cases of violence and intimidation to subtler disinformation campaigns, barriers to fair party competition, and the under-representation of women and minority candidates. Most election results are not rejected outright or overturned but they are commonly flawed.

Both executives and marketers agree that, on average, only a quarter of all the thought leadership content seen every day is engaged with, leaving much to go to waste.

After consuming compelling thought leadership, seven in ten share it via email and consume more from that same source; 76% are influenced in their purchasing decisions, 67% would be willing to advocate for that brand; and 83% are influenced in the choice of potential business partner.

More than 60% of marketers strongly agree or somewhat agree that internal alignment is a barrier to creating effective thought leadership.

African Languages: Unlocking Twitter'S Dwindling Growth

Twitter, which uses Microsoft's Bing translation app, properly indexes only the following 3 African indigenous languages - KiSwahili, Afrikaans and Malagasy. In a continent of more than 2 100 spoken languages and the top 10 of which are spoken by tens of millions of Africans, it is baffling that only 3 are recognised by this microblog. The correct indexing of Africa's most dominant language spoken by more than 100 million people - KiSwahili - and is also the most tweeted according to our analysis, only happened at the beginning of May 2018.

In the midst of all this, Twitter's growth has been in the doll drums since quarter 1 of 2015, according to Statista. Between then and quarter 3 of 2018, the microblog's growth has been a paltry 8%, from 302 million to 326 million. Compare that to Facebook's growth that was 58% - from 1 441 000 to 2 271 000 - for the same period!

During this session we'll explore how Twitter can partly unlock the sluggish growth by indexing additional African indigenous languages. This will be backed by stats and facts, using Facebook as a benchmark.

When you think of the creative economy in Africa, at first glance, the rich history and splendor of the arts, music and entertainment sectors continue to dominate the space. While these sectors continue to bring in the top dollars, the continent needs to posture for the future and break into the highly lucrative sub-genre of fantasy fiction. Let's take an example of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is one of the leaders in this space, they have grossed over $12bn since the release of the first film from its stable in 2008 (Iron MAN). Ironically the MCU title with the largest sales is Black Panther with a plot and theme centered around a fictional African country (Wakanda) and it grossed just over $700mn at the box office. This speaks to the latent global demand for original fictional content from the continent be it comic books, short films, TV and digital series. While Africa has a plethora of untold stories, some writers are already blazing the trail and setting a benchmark for the global acceptance of the African Fantasy Fiction Genre. Tomi Adeyemi ( Children of the blood and bone), Nnedi Okorafor (Binti), Tochi Onyebuchi ( Beasts Made of Night). Move over Game of Thrones these African titles and more coming.
