A Thousand Lives: How Stories Influence Social Change
Stories are important in driving the vehicle of social change. Throughout history, stories relating to human rights abuses, government policies, and social justice have all helped to push forward progress around the world.

Mandela Washington Fellows are a crop of young people who are working to influence their communities and countries through stories and action. Some Fellows have illuminated the plight of disadvantage kids in slum communities, others have demonstrated how simple things like art can be used to influence a group of young people to promote change.

A Thousand Lives: How Stories Influence Social Change panelist will present the inspiring impact of the work they have done in order to bring change to their community using different storytelling techniques.

Participants will learn
  • the art of using visual, kinesthetic, and auditory methods to tell compelling stories about the work they do in their communities.how stories can be used to drive social change
  • how stories are interwoven and how best to frame isolated ideas into a big picture story.
  • how to use stories to apply for grants and funding
  • how to use stories to show growth and impact

The Mandela Washington Fellowship and the YALI Network in Nigeria work to develop and promote young leaders who look within their communities and find specific areas in which they can serve to bring change to such communities.

This session is powered by the passion and success of Mandela Fellows from across the continent and is coordinated by the Mandela Washington Fellows Alumni Association (Nigeria Chapter) and IREX.

Immersive Stories - The Future Of Storytelling
Limited Capacity seats available

Stories - with great influence comes great responsibility. Never more so than when we consider the future of storytelling. Immersive Stories - The Future of Storytelling is a panel discussion exploring immersive storytelling - a powerful new tool for sharing experiences.

Immersive storytelling's significant power has been utilized by the likes of the UN who set up a VR unit in 2015 to showcase their work. It has been embraced by journalism (in 2016 the New York Times sent Google Cardboard headsets to all its subscribers in the US), advertising and many more to bring stories to life in a ways that had not been possible.

As we discuss the technologies that underpin immersive storytelling - augmented and virtual reality - we'll discuss both what they enable, and the dark side of this potential. Who will ensure that we tell stories for good?

This panel discussion brings the future to Africa, with a series of trailblazers who are at the forefront of utilizing immersive storytelling for their craft.

The average person has at one time or the other been a victim of body shaming. Why do you look skinny? Why are you so fat? Why are you so curvy? Why aren't you curvy? Where is your summer body? Why is your nose broad? These questions have seeped into our subconscious, making us feel less beautiful or desired and yearn for the desperate need for validation. The dangerous aftermath of this is depression and mental health issues.

How has changing or improving one's style resulted in body image positivity and confidence? How have fashion influencers with different body types inspired their followers to be more confident in themselves? OOTD DISRUPT: THE LOOK is a panel discussion that will challenge these question while sharing stories on how style and body image can impact lives!

Inclusion For All: Making Financial Inclusion A Reality For Nigeria
According to the World Bank, Financial Inclusion is "the ability of individuals and businesses to access useful and affordable financial products and services that meet their needs transactions, payments, savings, credit and insurance delivered in a responsible and sustainable way".   Financial Inclusion also refers to citizens access to financial services in such a manner that enables every adult citizen to realize his/her full potential and life aspirations. Growing financial inclusion as a means of lifting citizens out of poverty, improving citizens quality of life and enhancing the capacity of citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development. In Nigeria, only 41 % of Nigerians had bank accounts in 2017, a decline from 44 percent in 2014, according to the World Bank. With 2018 starting out with stagnant financial inclusion numbers in June of 2018 the Central Bank of Nigeria announced a National Financial Inclusion strategy review in order to stay on track for the 2020 80% financial inclusion goal. The reviewed strategy puts forward a draft of suggestions on the best model to help drive financial inclusion in the country. Others have said the country is a peculiar one and as such, it needs a tailor-made strategy, as compared to the mobile money model that has spurred financial inclusion growth around the world. Meanwhile, in furtherance of its mandate to promoting a sound financial system in Nigeria and the need to enhance access to financial services for the unbanked rural segments of society, Nigeria 's Central  Bank recently proposed Payment Service Banks (PSB) aimed at helping to achieve the set 80 percent financial inclusion rate by 2020.

Inclusion for all is the only way to achieve economic prosperity for Nigeria. Every Nigerian is needed to improve the quality of life for all. Inclusion For All: Making Financial Inclusion a reality for Nigeria is a panel by BusinessDay Media Limited, which aims to shed light on financial inclusion issues and opportunities to speak to uncover the bottlenecks that are currently being faced and realistically pan out how to achieve the 2020 80 % financial inclusion goal. This session will bring together Nigeria's most influential public figures and financial inclusion experts to move the needle forward in 2019.

Influential Content: Using Storytelling To Drive Social Change In The Digital Age
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The advent of social media has given everyone the opportunity to have a voice and speak up on issues they are passionate about and invested in. This has been a double-edged sword with people both using their platforms to build, contribute positively and improve on the narrative and happenings in the society, and those who peddle fake news and tear down the image of individuals, categories and groups of people, as well as the nation as a whole.

More and more influential people are being called upon to take on the mantle of using their platform for social good by reflecting a positive image of the society, culture and country they represent, to lending their voices using various media in speaking up against social injustice, holding leaders accountable, as well as inspiring people to positive actions such as running for public office and making their votes count.

More and more influencers are rising to the occasion by becoming more responsible in their content, their image and their offerings. There is still the challenge of proper storytelling, content creation and dispersion for influencers and those who seek to lend their voices to social change, using social media for good.

This panel session will feature top influencers from Thought Leadership, Business, Publishing, Music and the Movie Industry who have been known to champion social good by leveraging storytelling, content creation and social media. They will share with the audience how they can also take up responsibility and use these same tools to make a difference using social media platforms.

The Digital Revolution: Streaming, Mobile, Experiential & New Conversion Platforms
Music is now consumed more conveniently and immediately than ever before via a plethora of streaming and digital platforms, a list which seems to continue to grow exponentially, as services seek to provide a more user-friendly and effective vehicle for music discovery and consumption.

At the same time, multi-media companies (radio, TV, streaming, on-demand), legal firms, streaming/audio companies, rights organizations, content owners/creators and others are navigating the opportunities, challenges, and legalities of our burgeoning global music eco-system.

Additionally, the live arena has seen significant digital evolution for both existing platforms and new ones as consumers search for more efficient ticketing/merchandise purchase solutions and wish to connect with their peers to share their experiences immediately driven by photo and video moments via established and emerging social platforms.

This panel will bring together trusted minds with a vested interest in the digital/mobile and tech space to discuss how they are competing for consumer attention as well as monetizing the experience for creators, content owners and the digital and mobile landlords of the virtual world.

Who Needs You Anyway? Reinventing The Artist-Label Relationship In The Digital Era
Today s world is giving independent artists more avenues than ever before to get their music created, distributed and consumed. As a result, many are questioning the need for artists to bind themselves to the conventional label deal, while for others, the allure of being a signed artist remains a coveted goal.

In the same vein, the balance of power between artist managers and labels is shifting and becoming ever more complex in the digital age, particularly when it comes to marketing.
Battlegrounds include who owns what data, who has what access to data and who owns the marketing relationship (and spend) these days.

How can all sides learn to work better together to the benefit of artists? Where are the gaps in communication? How are these roles likely to shift further in the future?
Ultimately how can an artist determine what is the best option for their career?

This panel will explore the relevance of the artist-label relationship in the digital era through the lens of the recording agreement. By comparing and contrasting conventional recording deals with emerging alternative arrangements, we will explore ways in which artists and labels can achieve a more symbiotic, balanced relationship that truly reflects the realities of the 21st Century digital environment.

The New Music Economy: A Collaborative Team Approach
While today's songwriters and performers can potentially make more money than ever before, that doesn't automatically mean they're going to be set for life. We've all seen the hard-luck stories about singers who were big stars just a few years ago who somehow wind up penniless after a series of setbacks, and we continue to see artists from all genres or music, who declare bankruptcy, sometimes even repeatedly, in an effort to manage debts that exceed their incomes.

The panel will discuss the new music economy and the critical importance of a collaborative team approach to proactively build and protect the artist/band/ producer s financial resources, with real-life planning strategies and safeguards that can be utilized to avoid the potential landmines, helping to ensure a solid, and stress-free financial future.

The Use Of Data In Telling Authentic Stories
When was the last time you received a viral Whatsapp story that was too good to be true? Or a story that quoted crazy statistics and facts without any source? As Nigerians, we are often skeptical of each other s stories. And globally, the stories that come out of Nigeria are not always the ones we would choose.

But as human beings, storytelling is a core part of our interaction with one another. Our stories have the power to make great impact so we need to be aware of the responsibility we have to use data wisely and avoid misinforming our audiences.

Proper use of data and good fact sharing practices have the potential to drive major change. The power of data for storytelling is so important, especially for us as Africans. Both globally and within our borders, we need to know how to tell powerful, authentic stories that use data to showcase our realities.

Storytelling has always been a way to communicate with humans on an emotional level. Whether in business, marketing, advocacy, improving citizen s rights or non profits attracting funds, for us at Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative we believe in finding stories that resonate with our audience in every way possible.

Internet Governance: Make Your Voice Count
As policy makers and technical experts work to connect the remaining two-thirds of the world s nations, the way in which the Internet is governed will likely have an impact on how we use it and how it evolves.

The Internet Society is working for an open, globally-connected, trustworthy, and secure Internet for everyone. We aim to reform-decision making approaches to deliver sound Internet policies that put people s interests at the center. We want to build a digital future that puts people first.

In Africa, we have been working closely with organizations such as the African Union on a new set of guidelines that highlight how privacy protection and the responsible use of personal data are critical factors in building greater trust online and in advancing the digital economy in Africa.

We will also empower youth as a key force to organize their advocacy and defend their rights as we shape the future of the Internet. Their voices must be heard in the digital future. Together we can help them make their voices count.

The 2019 General Elections: How Technology Can Help!
Elections provide an opportunity for citizens to participate in politics and hold leaders to account. When they work well, elections can deepen civic engagement, inform public debate, stimulate party competition, facilitate peaceful leadership transitions, hold governments accountable, and allow the non-violent resolution of political conflict.

Too often political contests fail to achieve their objectives. There is widespread concern about falling turnout, public disaffection, party polarization, and the failure of elections to ensure legitimate outcomes. Electoral malpractices continue to undermine contests around the world, from overt cases of violence and intimidation to subtler disinformation campaigns, barriers to fair party competition, and the under-representation of women and minority candidates. Most election results are not rejected outright or overturned but they are commonly flawed.

The 2019 General Elections: How Technology Can Help!
is a panel session which will shed light on electoral corruption involving malpractices such as kick-back schemes for supporters, vote-buying, or the bribery of electoral officials. We will create a dialogue to empower citizens on unmasking corruption and improving electoral integrity in the electoral process using technological tools. We will explore challenges, mitigation strategies and share stories of how credible corruption reports will improve the upcoming elections.

Thought Leadership & The Changing Rules Of Content Marketing
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Thought leadership used to be really great. Thought leaders offered informed opinions and proprietary knowledge in their field of expertise. Whatever they told us was gospel, until marketers and motivational speakers invaded their hallowed space, placing us in the middle of a believability crisis.

Today, marketing content are masked as thought leadership pieces, but they are not difficult to detect and might lead to the loss of potential customers who detest such trickery. To the marketers, it s just smart content marketing. Isn t that the latest hype in town?

However, thought leadership is still a whitespace and can still be very valuable in marketing and brand positioning if done right. Interestingly, you don t have to be big to win with thought leadership. Thought-led Content marketing can still help your organization achieve growth targets, but you have to do it right.

A FEW FACTS TO NOTE

Three out of five global executives sometimes feel confused or overwhelmed by the volume of content they encounter, with more than half noting that intrusiveness has increased.

Both executives and marketers agree that, on average, only a quarter of all the thought leadership content seen every day is engaged with, leaving much to go to waste.

After consuming compelling thought leadership, seven in ten share it via email and consume more from that same source; 76% are influenced in their purchasing decisions, 67% would be willing to advocate for that brand; and 83% are influenced in the choice of potential business partner.

More than 60% of marketers strongly agree or somewhat agree that internal alignment is a barrier to creating effective thought leadership.

Thought Leadership & The Changing Rules Of Content Marketing will examine:
- What thought leadership is and isn t
- The nexus between thought leadership and content marketing
- What drives thought leadership content consumption?
- The best ways to present and distribute thought leadership content - Value marketing
- Generating inbound leads through thought leadership
-Innovative distribution of thought leadership content

Participants should have a background in marketing, PR, Brand management, Corporate Communications or Advertising

African Languages: Unlocking Twitter'S Dwindling Growth
Limited Capacity seats available

Twitter, which uses Microsoft's Bing translation app, properly indexes only the following 3 African indigenous languages - KiSwahili, Afrikaans and Malagasy. In a continent of more than 2 100 spoken languages and the top 10 of which are spoken by tens of millions of Africans, it is baffling that only 3 are recognised by this microblog. The correct indexing of Africa's most dominant language spoken by more than 100 million people - KiSwahili - and is also the most tweeted according to our analysis, only happened at the beginning of May 2018.

In the midst of all this, Twitter's growth has been in the doll drums since quarter 1 of 2015, according to Statista. Between then and quarter 3 of 2018, the microblog's growth has been a paltry 8%, from 302 million to 326 million. Compare that to Facebook's growth that was 58% - from 1 441 000 to 2 271 000 - for the same period!

During this session we'll explore how Twitter can partly unlock the sluggish growth by indexing additional African indigenous languages. This will be backed by stats and facts, using Facebook as a benchmark.

The Lagos Go-Slow Economy: What Research & Data Can Tell Us About Trade & Opportunities
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Lagos traffic hawkers are many things to many people: For some, they bring the market and products closer to consumers, an epitome of convenience. Others view them as nuisance who shouldn t be on the road. Some say they constitute road hazards, treading dangerously on the path of death. The Lagos State Government on the other hand, tolerates them for the sake of public opinion, but is genuinely concerned that they constitute an eyesore in relation to the kind of squeaky clean and modern image they want for the city.

The Lagos Go-Slow Economy: What Research & Data Can Tell Us About Trade & Opportunities will unpack the Lagos Go-Slow Economy. What do data from research and insights reveal as the real story and narrative in this vibrant yet controversial economy?

This discussion will share lessons from the go-slow economy on how brands can get closer to consumers and in the process help put people to work.

Disrupting For Inclusion – Changing The Game Of Money In Africa
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Nigeria is one of the fastest growing economies in the world with about 40 million micro, small and medium-sized businesses across the country, contributing to about 48% of the country s GDP.

It is surprising, however, that Nigeria remains one of the most underbanked countries in the world. As at June 2018, about 37% of Nigeria s adult population (ca. 50m people) had no access to financial services or credit, according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The fin-tech sector in Nigeria is fast growing and the opportunities are endless with the potential to redefine the financial landscape in years to come.

Join this session to learn how players in the fin-tech space are leveraging technology and innovation to drive financial inclusion across Africa.

The Future Of Africa's Creative Economy: Beyond The Folktales
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

When you think of the creative economy in Africa, at first glance, the rich history and splendor of the arts, music and entertainment sectors continue to dominate the space. While these sectors continue to bring in the top dollars, the continent needs to posture for the future and break into the highly lucrative sub-genre of fantasy fiction. Let's take an example of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is one of the leaders in this space, they have grossed over $12bn since the release of the first film from its stable in 2008 (Iron MAN). Ironically the MCU title with the largest sales is Black Panther with a plot and theme centered around a fictional African country (Wakanda) and it grossed just over $700mn at the box office. This speaks to the latent global demand for original fictional content from the continent be it comic books, short films, TV and digital series. While Africa has a plethora of untold stories, some writers are already blazing the trail and setting a benchmark for the global acceptance of the African Fantasy Fiction Genre. Tomi Adeyemi ( Children of the blood and bone), Nnedi Okorafor (Binti), Tochi Onyebuchi ( Beasts Made of Night). Move over Game of Thrones these African titles and more coming.
