Things Fall Apart: Can Traditional African Storytelling Save Content Marketing?
Limited Capacity filling up

Story Story Once upon a time when you heard that phrase, you knew a remarkable story was about to leave you covered in goosebumps. The times may have changed rapidly but something about stories and how they have been told needs to be re-lived, even now that these tales are no longer told by moonlight.

The digital space is more saturated than ever; everything is calling for our attention. With a library worth of content to scroll through daily, We don't have 30 seconds to be interrupted but will give 30 minutes to hear a great story. So the Big Questions: What ingredients make a great story? What is it about a story that makes your audience itch for more and be more than willing to share it?

Why are our content marketing efforts not pulling in the weight, why are our stories not sticking? Maybe we ve been doing it all wrong, maybe we need to go back to our old stories and have a rethink.

In this talk we will explore what content marketing can borrow from traditional African storytelling to build brands that stick!

We ll look at the approaches of the most successful story-led campaigns, books, movies, and the fundamental principles of what works to engage an audience. We will also look at the role of storytellers as gatekeepers and How digital storytellers can chronicle lifestyle and culture as it evolves as well as create rich digital experiences that supports rather than disrupts.

You ll leave inspired to reboot your content strategy and be armed with the how of storytelling for creating the remarkable brands of the future that captures and holds the attention of digital natives.

OOTD Disrupt: The Look
Limited Capacity filling up

Body image, body shaming, social media trolling/cyber-bulling has been reoccurring factors in today's world of social media. The average person has at one time or the other been a victim of body shaming. Why do you look skinny? Why are you so fat? Why are you so curvy? Why aren't you curvy? Where is your summer body? Why is your nose broad? These questions have seeped into our subconscious, making us feel less beautiful or desired and yearn for the desperate need for validation. The dangerous aftermath of this is depression and mental health issues.

How has changing or improving one's style resulted in body image positivity and confidence? How have fashion influencers with different body types inspired their followers to be more confident in themselves? OOTD DISRUPT: THE LOOK is a panel discussion that will challenge these question while sharing stories on how style and body image can impact lives!

Writing A Compelling Story Readers Will Love!
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The ability to tell an authentic story is a powerful tool that connects audiences all over the world. A writer who is able to tell an authentic story has the ability to change narratives and shape perspectives.

Telling a good story, however, starts with the basic knowledge of how to put words together in a manner that draws the reader in. It is one thing to have the story in your head; it is another thing to write it in a way that stirs emotions with a reader, enough to get them to relate with the story and support a particular cause or the underlying message of the story. That, in essence, is influence.

Writing A Compelling Story Readers Will Love! is a workshop which will:
  • Teach participants how to write a story that is compelling. You'll learn practical steps to help get your story from the idea stage to the written stage. This includes learning the basics of good writing to help hone your writing skills.
  • Show you how to deal with writer's block and what to do when you get stuck.

Through an immersive exercise, participants will end the session by writing a short story which will be reviewed by our team. By the send of the session, our goal is to ensure that participants will be able to consistently write compelling stories for themselves, for brands and for digital media platforms.

The Future Of Africa's Creative Economy: Beyond The Folktales
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

When you think of the creative economy in Africa, at first glance, the rich history and splendor of the arts, music and entertainment sectors continue to dominate the space. While these sectors continue to bring in the top dollars, the continent needs to posture for the future and break into the highly lucrative sub-genre of fantasy fiction. Let's take an example of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is one of the leaders in this space, they have grossed over $12bn since the release of the first film from its stable in 2008 (Iron MAN). Ironically the MCU title with the largest sales is Black Panther with a plot and theme centered around a fictional African country (Wakanda) and it grossed just over $700mn at the box office. This speaks to the latent global demand for original fictional content from the continent be it comic books, short films, TV and digital series. While Africa has a plethora of untold stories, some writers are already blazing the trail and setting a benchmark for the global acceptance of the African Fantasy Fiction Genre. Tomi Adeyemi ( Children of the blood and bone), Nnedi Okorafor (Binti), Tochi Onyebuchi ( Beasts Made of Night). Move over Game of Thrones these African titles and more coming.
